Tinnitus and BPPV Evaluations
Have you ever rolled out of bed in the morning and felt like the room is spinning? Does the feeling pass if you stay still for a minute or two? You may be suffering from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV for short.
The condition is caused by an abnormal stimulation of nerve receptors inside the vestibular system, the balance organ that is found in your inner ear. Wondering what causes this aggravating stimulation? The three structures of your vestibular structure contain tiny crystals of calcium carbonate that float in a gel-like fluid. When these crystals get dislodged from the gel and fall into the wrong space, the nerves in your balance organ send destabilizing information to your brain, resulting in temporary dizziness. Though insurance does not always cover the treatment of this type of vertigo, we can still help you manage your discomfort.
Some BPPV sufferers also report ringing ears before an episode. This ringing, called tinnitus, may occur in non-BPPV sufferers. Not much is known about the causes of tinnitus, but it is often associated with some sort of auditory nerve trauma. While there is no definitive cure, there are evidence-based treatments that are often effective at quieting the sounds in your head.
If you suffer from either BPPV or tinnitus, it’s a good idea to contact Choice Audiology to rule out hearing loss. We can also provide treatment options for these frustrating and unpleasant conditions.
